They Love Us
Unmasked

From pain to understanding — what a beloved animal heals in life’s first wound.

A book that holds you, for anyone who has lost a love with four paws, feathers or fur — and didn’t know it could hurt this much. It doesn’t rush your grief. It sits beside you, gives a name to what hurts and takes you, one virtue at a time, to the other side.

If you’ve made it this far

Your pain is real.
It deserves a place.

Maybe you were told that "it was just a pet." That "you can get another one." That too much time has passed for you to still be like this.

It wasn’t just a pet. It was the one who waited for you at the door. The one who stayed when everyone else left. The one who saw you cry without needing an explanation and didn’t ask you to be different. Their absence fills the whole house — and the world pretends not to understand.

This book understands. It doesn’t come to rush your grief or cover it up with a new love. It comes to sit beside you, give a name to what hurts and take you, with care, from pain to understanding.

"No one ever taught us what to do when the one who dies has four paws and slept in our bed."

Why it hurts so much

They filled old gaps

A beloved animal touches wounds that come from long before them. That’s why their absence opens everything up again.

🐾

Companionship

The presence that never left you alone — not even on the worst day.

🤲

Touch

The warmth of leaning against someone without anything needing to be said.

💗

Feeling

The crack through which emotion came back. Someone who sensed your state before you did.

🌿

Being needed

Having someone to care for — and finding in that a reason to get up every day.

🛡️

Safety

The alertness that finally rests near someone who trusts you.

🎭

Being yourself

The only place without a mask. Being loved exactly as you are, without pretending anything.

Loves with four paws, feathers and fur

They love us unmasked

Dogs, cats and birds — because the bond doesn’t ask whether it’s paws, feathers or fur.

Part I · The wound

The forbidden question

Cláudia knew something had changed forever when she opened the door and the house made no sound.

For fourteen years that door had been greeted with a commotion. Nails slipping on the floor, Teco’s whole body trembling with joy, as if she had come back from a long trip and not from the bakery on the corner. Fourteen years. And now the door opened onto silence — and the silence had weight, it filled the whole living room, it leaned against her like a living thing.

She dropped her bag in the usual spot. She looked at the corner of the kitchen, where the water bowl was still full; she hadn’t had the heart to take it away. And then something small and cruel happened: for an instant, without thinking, her body got ready to sidestep the dog that would come running. Her knee even bent slightly. The body takes longer than the head to understand death.

That night, Cláudia cried in a way she hadn’t cried in years. She cried until her chest hurt. And at some point, in the middle of the crying, a thought came that made her freeze — because she realized she was crying more than she had cried at her own uncle’s funeral, six months before.

That’s when the shame rose, cold, up her throat.

“How absurd. It’s a dog. It was just a dog.”

Who wrote it

This book was born from Maya

Maya came into my life in 2006, the day after the night Lorena, my first cocker, faded away in my arms. For thirteen years she stayed in Brazil, and I in Germany. When I arrived it was a celebration; when I left it was mourning. Every time.

On December 1, 2019 she landed in Frankfurt, fourteen years old, crossing the airport in a diaper and drawing smiles from everyone. Here in the Alps, she smelled the flowers one by one, as if she were discovering the world for the first time.

She passed away on December 28, 2022. I fell apart. I cried night after night — I didn’t cry, I howled. For a long time I thought all that pain was a flaw of mine. Only when I found Virtology did each piece of that suffering find its place.

Maya’s ashes are in an urn, here at home. It is her photo, with that urn, that is on the cover. This book is the map I wish I had had that Christmas. If I made it through, you will make it through too.

Frequently asked questions

You may be wondering

Is it really for me if mine was neither a dog nor a cat?

Yes. The book speaks of any beloved animal — dogs, cats and birds too. The bond doesn’t ask whether it’s paws, feathers or fur.

My loss was recent. Is it too soon to read it?

There is no too soon or too late. The book goes with you wherever the pain is, on the first day or years later. It respects your time.

What if I haven’t lost them yet, but I’m afraid?

The book is for you too. There is a chapter on the pain that comes before, and each virtue has its own excerpt for those who fear losing.

Will it make me cry more?

The first pages may touch you deeply, because they give a name to what you feel. But the book doesn’t leave you in the pain: it guides you, with care, from pain to understanding.

Which format should I choose?

The content is the same. The Kindle eBook (R$ 31.99) is the most affordable and arrives in the Kindle app. The PDF (R$ 37) arrives by email and can be printed at home. The print edition is the full-color physical book, sold and shipped by Clube de Autores.

Can I give it as a gift to someone who is grieving?

Yes. Many people don’t know what to say to someone who has lost an animal. This book says it for you.

They loved you unmasked.
Let this book take care of you now.

From pain to understanding — in your own time, held close, one page at a time.
